The annual Corangamarah Cup was held on Oaks Day and this auspicious trophy was hotly contested by staff throughout CAH for its prestigious trophy and bragging rights!
Four races were run in the lead up to the Cup with the winners from each race qualifying for the big race.
The Chief Steward was working the crowd for most of the carnival testing both horses and jockeys for various contraband, but was seen at the bar ‘getting into the right spirit’ midway through the afternoon and wasn’t quite the same afterwards. (Maybe we should breath test the Chief Steward next year?)
The Corangamarah Cup was run on an unusual wet/dry track (rating 4–good to 6-heavy in racing terms) which makes it the unique event it is during Victoria’s famous spring racing. The following jockeys made the main event:
Barrier | Horse | Jockey | Department | Final Placing |
1 | Princess Bubble Gum | Maddi Mahoney | Urgent Care | 2 |
2 | Real Quick Horse | Jackson Williams | Food Services | 3 |
3 | Winner Winner Chicken Dinner | Cory Williams | Maintenance | disqualified |
4 | Spotty | Bec Dawes | Corangamarah | 1 |
Cory Williams raced around the course in quick time but returned a ‘positive’ swab afterwards, thereby the Chief Steward declared Bec Dawes (Corangamarah) the Cup winner for 2018! (There was no protest.)
Thanks to guest judges: Jane Whitehead (Finance) and Leanne Clarke (Health Information Services) for assisting with Fashions on the Field. Prizes were awarded to the following residents:
Lady of the Day | Betty Berry |
Gent of the Day | David Ponton |
Hat of the Day | Mary Fox |
Thanks to Bernice Jenkins for her wonderful Chief Steward role. Thanks also to staff who joined in the fun, brought in flowers from their gardens, participated in races, helped with afternoon tea or as officials during the races. The residents enjoyed the afternoon’s frivolity and the laughter was infectious! Well done to Pam and her Lifestyle team.
